Color Guard Pole and Flag Information

DONATED & ADOPTED A POLE & FLAG IN 2023

If you donated to Adopt-A-Pole last year, you will not need to pay a rental fee. You will have to provide the $50 security deposit for use just like all other instruments/equipment from the WVUAB Inventory. This deposit will be refunded immediately on Saturday following the return of the equipment in good to John Sinsel after our performances.

USING YOUR OWN POLE?

  • You may use your own pole. We do require use of a WVUAB flag to coordinate our look with The Pride. We will need to know this in advance to make sure we have a flag ready for your pole. Please email Ellen at EllenRamey@wvualumniband.org.
  • The WVUAB flag MUST fit your pole. If for some reason the diameter of your pole is unusual and it does not easily fit into the flag sleeve, you will need to use a WVUAB pole.
  • The $20 rental fee for the flag and $50 security deposit will apply.

REHEARSAL VIDEO

This year is different because we are performing at BOTH pregame and halftime.  Halftime includes both Homecoming activities and a special tribute to Don Wilcox with a performance of Walk Him Up/Old Man River. We are asking The Pride for a rehearsal video to help you prepare for this event.

PERFORMANCE NOTE

Guard members do not have to wear a hat for the Parade or Game Day performances.

It is with a heavy heart that we reach out to you today to share the news of the passing of a true legend and guiding light in our organization, Mr. Don Wilcox. For many of us, Mr. Wilcox was not just a former director; he was a mentor, a friend, and an outstanding human whose impact crosses several generations of members and supporters of The Pride of West Virginia.

Don Wilcox's legacy in the WVU Marching Band is nothing short of extraordinary. From 1971 to 1997, Don dedicated himself tirelessly to nurturing the talents of countless young musicians, transforming the band into the magnificent ensemble it is today. Under his leadership, the band flourished, growing from a modest 88 members to an impressive 325, a testament to his unwavering dedication and passion for music and education. After his tenure as the director of the Pride of West Virginia, he continued his legacy as Director of Bands until May 2005 and was  bestowed the title of Director of Bands Emeritus upon retiring.

Beyond his role as a director, Don was a visionary who paved the way for progress. In 1972, he made history by opening the doors of the WVU Marching Band to women, a decision that not only broke barriers but also enriched the band with diversity and talent. His commitment to inclusivity and equality set a powerful example for us all to follow, leaving a mark on our organization and the wider community.

But perhaps Don's greatest gift was not just his musical prowess or leadership skills, but his ability to inspire and uplift those around him. His genuine warmth, kindness, and unwavering support touched the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know him. Whether it was through his encouraging words or his infectious passion for music, Don had a unique talent for bringing out the best in others and instilling in them the confidence to reach for their dreams and beyond.

As we mourn the loss of this remarkable man, let us also celebrate the memories, lessons, and experiences that he has left behind for us. Let us honor his legacy by continuing to uphold the values of excellence, inclusivity, and camaraderie that he held dear. And let us take comfort in knowing that though he may no longer be with us in person, his spirit will live on in the music we play, the friendships we cherish, and the lives he has forever touched.

Let us remember Don Wilcox not with tears of sorrow but with smiles of gratitude for the time we were blessed to have known him. May his melodies echo in our hearts forever, serving as a reminder of the profound impact one person can have on the world.

Every note. Every step. Every person. Every time.

With deepest sympathies,

The WVU Alumni Band, Board of Directors
