Guest Presenter: Andrea "Andi" Hasley, Assistant Director of Development at the WVU College of Creative Arts and Media, will present information about the 2026 WVU Day of Giving in March and various ways alumna can provide financial gifts to WVU.

To our WVU Band Alumni:

We're excited to announce the 2026 membership year launch. The Board approved the 2026 budget and membership dues on January 11, 2026. Please be sure to review the details.

We have some exciting events being planned for our members in 2026! Visit our website and regularly review our Event Calendar to stay up-to-date on all of the organizational activities this year.

For 2026, we offer five membership levels and membership prices remain unchanged from last year:

Pep Band: $10 plus the purchase of the official Navy Pep Band T-shirt ($29.95 Merchandise Store). This level is for those interested in pep band performances only. It does not include voting rights or participation in member events, such as homecoming.
Hail West: Free for first-year members who participated in their final season with The Pride during the fall of 2025. Includes pep band events, voting rights, membership meetings and committee participation, exclusive content, and a name badge with your membership level at homecoming.
Fight Mountaineers: $50/year ($40 if paid by March 31). Includes pep band events, voting rights, membership meetings and committee participation, exclusive content, and a name badge with your membership level at homecoming.
Country Roads: $100/year. Includes Fight Mountaineers benefits, $20 merchandise refund, member event discounts, early homecoming registration, and a $10 donation to Pride Fundraising.
Don & Kaye Jean Wilcox: $150/year for two members at the same address. Includes Country Roads benefits for one member and Fight Mountaineers for the second, plus special couples packages.

Membership dues cover our core operating expenses, such as storage, insurance, IT services, accounting, and office supplies. As a reminder, event fees, like those collected for homecoming, are used exclusively for event-related member costs.

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your participation in the Annual Pride Picnic Fundraiser. We genuinely appreciate all who contributed to the success of the band picnic, whether through monetary donations or product contributions. We are pleased to report that your generosity resulted in raising over $4,600 to provide food for The Pride. The students have expressed their gratitude for your continued support.

We’d like to extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who purchased a ticket to support the WVU Alumni Band – Kick-off to a New Era Gala and Elimination Dinner. Your contribution not only made this event possible but also holds the promise of a brighter future for the Mountaineer Marching Band. To those who not only purchased a ticket but also joined us in person, we thank you for bringing your energy, spirit, and love of music to the celebration. We also sincerely appreciate everyone who participated in the auctions and raffles; your enthusiasm added excitement to the evening and helped boost our fundraising efforts.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to our generous donors and dedicated volunteers, whose time, talent, and support were not just helpful but essential to the event's success. WVU Alumni Band Launches Fundraiser to Provide Band Camp Meal for 2025 Pride Members

We are excited to share that this year, we are organizing a fundraiser to provide a special meal for the 2025 Pride members during their band camp. Donations will cover a delicious catered meal by Colasante's Ristorante & Pub, drinks, desserts, and supplies (plates, utensils, napkins). The projected cost for this event is $5,000.

To make donating as secure and convenient as possible, we are using Cheddar Up, a trusted fundraising platform widely used by organizations like ours. Please note that, as with many electronic donation sites—including our own band website—Cheddar Up charges credit card processing fees. Unfortunately, the fundraising committee is unable to absorb these fees, and moving forward, credit card fees for fundraising events will be passed along to the donor. While we regret this necessity, our priority is ensuring that every dollar you contribute is dedicated to the intended purpose.

Rest assured that all funds raised for this event will go directly toward providing the picnic meal for The Pride. Should there be any remaining funds after the event, they will be set aside to help cover costs of future meals for the band.

We deeply appreciate your generosity and ongoing support for the WVU Alumni Band and The Pride. Thank you for helping us continue this meaningful tradition and for investing in the musical legacy of our university.

Pride Stipends

In previous years, we have proudly collected donations to provide each marching band student with a stipend during the band camp picnic. However, beginning in 2025, university policy allows stipends to be distributed only during times of travel, such as bowl games or special trips like last year’s Macy’s parade appearance. This means that while we will not be collecting funds for stipends at camp this year, we remain committed to finding meaningful ways to support our student musicians each season in collaboration with the WVU Band Office. We encourage you to continue supporting our Annual Pride Picnic, to help show the band members just how much they are valued.

WVU Alumni Band Seeks A Member to Serve as Treasurer

The WVU Alumni Band, hereafter referred to as AB, is seeking letters of interest for position of Treasurer as outlined in the Bylaws. The Treasurer is an appointed position. The treasurer is a financial professional selected by the organization's leadership, rather than elected by the membership, to manage and oversee all financial activities. The appointment is based on the individual's qualifications, experience, and ability to effectively handle complex financial tasks and contribute to the organization's financial strategy and stability.

In addition to the role and responsibilities of the Treasurer outlined below, the candidate must have experience completing and filing Form 990-EZ and or Form 990.

Bylaws - Article 8, Section L, Number 4

Treasurer shall:

a. be a general member of the organization who is appointed by the Board from recommendations made by the vetting committee;

b. be a CPA or have a business degree and experience in accounting;

c. keep the financial books and records of the organization;

d. prepare financial reports as requested by the President and Board of Directors;

e. prepare and present a statement at each Board/Officer/Membership meeting and the annual meeting;

f. prepare (or coordinate with an independent CPA or CPA firm) all tax filings;

g. sign the State and Federal Income tax report;

h. have the availability to meet WVU Alumni Band deadlines;

i. copy the WVU Alumni Band President, Vice President, and Bursar on all electronic communication;

j. perform other duties as assigned by the President; and

k. maintain a continuity folder (electronic or hard copy) with all information about the office of the Bursar, including all Google Drive documents.

The Treasurer will work closely with the Bursar and the President. For your information and for clarity, the following are the duties of the Bursar.

Bylaws - Article 8, Section L, Number 5

Bursar shall:

a. be elected from the Board of Directors;

b. be able to attend all meetings or designate a backup;

c. be responsible for the funds of the organization;

d. maintain the checkbook and bank check card for the organization;

e. have signatory authority for the bank accounts along with one elected Officer;

f. pay all bills, including reimbursement requests, received by the organization;

g. maintain and present all requisition forms and purchase order records to the Board of Directors for approval before payment;

h. report to the Treasurer all distributions made on behalf of the organization;

i. deposit money promptly or give it to the Treasurer to deposit;

j. copy the WVU Alumni Band President, Vice President, and Treasurer on all electronic communications; and

k. maintain a continuity folder (electronic or hard copy) with all information about the office of the Bursar, including all Google Drive documents.

The BOD approved the 2025 budget and membership dues on Sunday, January 12, 2025. Our various committee volunteers have been hard at work for the past week preparing all of the updates to the database, dues portal, and website for you! Thank you to this team for all of their hard work!

Pep Band - ($10 and the purchase of the official Navy Pep Band T-shirt. T-shirt pricing to be determined based on the vendor.) For the member who only wants to play for pep band performances. Performances require the navy pep band T-shirt. This level does not include participation in member events, such as homecoming and the member will not have voting rights.

Hail West (FREE for 1st year members joining after marching with The Pride.) & Fight Mountaineers ($50 for the year. However, if you pay your dues by March 31^st, an early bird discount will apply, and the dues payment will be $40.) - Membership includes:

membership events, such as homecoming,
pep band events,
voting rights,
member meeting and committee participation,
access to member only content, such as member forums, photo galleries and more, and
name badge with membership level during homecoming.

Country Roads ($100) - Membership includes:

benefits in the Fight Mountaineers membership,
$20 Alumni Band merchandise voucher,
discounts for various member events during the year,
early bird registration for homecoming, and
$10 donation for Pride Fundraising.

Don & Kaye Jean Wilcox ($150 and includes two memberships for married couples, domestic partners or two members living at the same address.) - Membership includes:

the first member will receive benefits in the Country Roads membership and
the second member will receive the benefits in the Fight Mountaineers membership.

Members selecting the Don & Kaye Jean Wilcox membership will have couples packages to select from for different events throughout the year, including homecoming.

A question-and-answer session for members who have questions about the new membership levels is forthcoming.

We rely on membership dues to pay for general operating costs, including but not limited to:

Notice from the Executive Committee Concerning 2024 BOD Elections

Members,

Given concerns and uncertainty raised among the membership and board of directors to the legality of suspended qualifications for nomination to be elected to the board; and election procedure as outlined in the amended bylaws of the WVU Alumni Band, inc. of Sept 24, 2024, the roll out of the election will be delayed until these questions can be resolved, following Robert’s Rules of Order 46:44 and 46:45. Also per these rules, the present directors will continue serving until the election can be completed.

Thank you for your patience as we work to resolve these concerns for the whole of the organization.

Voting Information for WVU Alumni Band Board of Directors

In accordance with the bylaws, elections for the WVU Alumni Band Board of Directors will be held electronically. The election window will open on Friday, October 25, 2024, and close on Wednesday, October 30, 2024.

Currently, six (6) of twelve (12) director’s two-year positions have expired. You may vote for up to six candidates to serve a two-year term. Later this week, you will be able to view candidate information on our website.

Members will receive an email from “WVU Alumni Band <invitations@mail.electionbuddy.com>” with voting information. Please mark this email address as safe in your account. The email will include:

the voting deadline,
a unique access key to the survey that can only be used by you, and
a hyper link to the survey.

Please do not forward your email to others. Once your unique link/access key is used, it cannot be used again. Your voting choices will remain anonymous. Even the administrators will not know how you cast your vote. Also, voting outcomes will not be visible to anyone until after the voting closes.

New for 2024

The WVU Alumni Band and The Pride of West Virginia will have a joint performance at halftime. Besides combining with The Pride for part of pregame, we will honor the life and legacy of Don Wilcox, former Director of Bands Emeritus and Director of the WVU Alumni Band, by joining The Pride for a special performance at halftime. Details forthcoming.

Back by Popular Demand

Early Game Day Packet and Party Ticket Pick Up - We are once again offering game day packet pick-up and check-in for the Friday party at the College of Creative Arts and Media (CCAM) Friday, October 18, from 10am-2pm. If you miss us at the CCAM, you can check-in at the door for the party or the indoor practice facility (IPF) behind the stadium on game day.

Game Day Parking - We will have a limited number of passes for the Tan Lot. These will be allocated based on the date and time you submit your game day registration. Those receiving a pass will be able to pick it up on Friday at the CCAM from 10am-2pm or at the lot entrance Saturday (time to be determined).

Homecoming Party

The party will be held at The Brew Pub located at 1291 University Ave, Morgantown, WV 26505 (between Walnut Street and Pleasant Street). Tickets are $30 per person and will not be available at the door. Attendees must be 21 years of age or older. The party will feature an informal program including games, auction items, and the WVU Marching Band Seniors! A great menu is planned.

Game Day

Member game ticket price is $45 and a guest ticket is $70.

You must be registered in order to participate in pre-game and halftime, even if you have your own ticket. You will need credentials from us in order to have access to Mountaineer Field.

We will not have a schedule for game day finalized until the game kick-off time is announced and logistics for our two performances is finalized with WVU Athletics and the the band office. Expect our schedule to begin at least 6 hours before kick-off. We will send out updates concerning game day practice times as more information becomes available. Updates will also be available on the Game Day Detailed Schedule website page the week of the game.

Equipment Rentals

Instruments and equipment rentals. The rental cost is $20 (nonrefundable fee) at the time of registration. Please remember to bring your $50 deposit (check - no cash please) and a fully completed rental agreement with you the first time you pick up your rental. You will receive your $50 deposit back when the instrument is returned to the truck to the equipment manager. Rentals will only be provided to those submitting registrations prior to Homecoming weekend. See more information at the website.

Guard members who donated to have their own pole and flag will still need to register for equipment. Please select the no cost option in the registration.

Dues and Registration

Dues must be paid before you register for Homecoming events. Please see information to register for 2024 Homecoming events.

Online registration closes October 10, 2024 and payments made by mail must be postmarked by October 10, 2024. Any payments and/or paper registrations not received by the due date are subject to cancellation. Late registrations are subject to a $35 late fee. A wait list will be available at the registration portal until Wednesday, October 16, 2024. If you take a chance and register the day of the event, you will need to come to the registration table at the IPF to see if we have tickets left. We do not issue refunds. Please plan accordingly.

*Please note that registrations for the parade and party are separate from game day events. This allows us to properly account for member attendance for the party and game day tickets.

The Bylaws Committee has been working for many months reviewing our organization’s bylaws. It has been ten years since they were adopted and many areas of the organization have evolved in such a way that many sections of the bylaws do not address our current and future needs. To complete the review, the Committee reviewed other alumni band organization’s bylaws, consulted with leadership of other alumni band organizations, lawyers, and members and leaders of our organization.

Pride Stipends and Band Camp Picnic

Over the last two years, many of you generously participated in supporting the Annual Pride Picnic and member stipends provided during WVU band camp. The Pride members and staff have been extremely grateful for your support and thoughtfulness.

We are reaching out to you once again to help support the Pride members during band camp 2024! Our goal this year is to provide each member with a $15 stipend. We have organized a section challenge for our members to help collect donations for the picnic and monetary gifts for each member. Any amount you can give is greatly appreciated.

Below is a list indicating how many stipends are needed for each section of the band. Even if the stipends in your section have all been covered, please consider donating so members in other sections can receive a stipend too.

Two Vacancies Being Filled for BOD

The Alumni Band Board of Directors will now be filling two open seats from the candidates that expressed interest earlier this month.

Jeff Caplinger resigned in November due to moving his family to live overseas. Sean Sawyer resigned from the board on February 13 owing to differences in the vision and operation of the board. We thank both Jeff and Sean for their time and contribution to the board over the past year.

The Board will share the names of the new Directors once they are vetted and appointed by the board in the coming weeks. Both of these seats are up for re-election in October.

Information Concerning The Don Wilcox Tribute Tour

Happy February Everyone!

There are a few announcements about the Michigan "Tribute to Don Wilcox" trip, in July, that I need to pass along to everyone. These announcements are vitally important, and I encourage everyone to read everything!

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT - After some lengthy discussions with the Wilcox family, John Hendricks and myself, we must make a one-day date change for the trip. This is being done to accommodate Mr. Wilcox's schedule. This date change is a small one, but we wanted to let everyone know as soon as new arrangements had been confirmed. The trip has shifted by one day and will now be Wednesday July 10-Sunday, July 14. Below is the overview for the trip:

Wednesday - July 10 - Rehearsal in Morgantown. For those who need accommodations for a night in Morgantown, we have worked out a special price at the Holiday Inn - University Area. This hotel is behind Ruby Memorial/Stadium area and a short distance to the CAC.
Thursday - July 11 - Travel day to Detroit, Michigan. Dinner and OVERNIGHT IN DETROIT
Friday - July 12 - Morning tour in Detroit and then travel to Northport, Michigan (lunch included). In the evening, group dinner at the high school, dress rehearsal in the auditorium and then the tribute concert. OVERNIGHT IN TRAVERSE CITY
Saturday - July 13 - Fun Day on Mackinac Island. OVERNIGHT IN TRAVERSE CITY
Sunday - July 14 - Travel day back to Morgantown (lunch included)

While we hope everyone who has already registered can accommodate the date shift, those who cannot will receive a full refund.

SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT - The program has now changed to be just a concert band performance. Almost everyone who registered was interested in performing in both a concert band and marching band. However, our instrumentation and participation numbers are more along the lines of a concert band. We still plan on doing pre-game music, however. We will be playing a pre-game medley for concert band that was arranged by Mr. Wilcox.

THIRD ANNOUNCEMENT - Several people have shown an interest in meeting us in Northport for the concert. For those of you who would like to do this, I need you to reach out to me via email with your intentions. There IS a cost for this type of participation - $70 per person. This covers a performance shirt, facilities/instrument rentals in Northport and dinner before the dress rehearsal. We are asking everyone to eat dinner together before the concert as we prepare for this special evening. Once you have reached out to me via email, I will send you an invoice for payment. This invoice can be paid online.

FINAL ANNOUNCEMENT - While we have a nice group registered, we do need more participants. I ask that you consider participating in this event and honoring Mr. Wilcox. Especially needed are woodwinds and concert band percussionists, however, no one will be turned away from this important (and historic) event. Given this, we have extended the registration deadline to March 16, 2024.

To our WVU Band Alumni:

We are excited to kick-off our 2024 membership year! We have some exciting events you will not want to miss.

New for this year

This year we are offering two membership levels; Pep Band Membership and Full Membership.

Pep Band Membership is for a member who only wants to play for pep band performances during the year without attending membership meetings, participating in other member only events, such as homecoming, serving on committees, or having voting rights. Pep Band Membership will be $5.00 for the year and you will be required to purchase the official Navy Blue Pep Band T-shirt.

Full Membership continues to include:

participation in membership events, such as homecoming;
participation in pep band events;
participation in membership meetings, including having voting rights; and
committee participation.

Full Membership dues are $40.00. However, if you pay your dues by March 31st, an early bird discount will apply, and the dues payment will be $30.00. The earlier you pay your dues, the more you can enjoy the events that the Alumni Band has to offer.

Membership renewal for 2024 will be processed as an "Event" from our website. Starting today, you can go to the website to process your payment. You will find the 2024 membership renewal on the homepage under "Upcoming Events or under the “Membership Payment and Event Registration Portal” tab.

We rely on membership dues to pay for general operating costs, including but not limited to:

storage unit
insurance
website and database/domain
accounting fees
office supplies

As a reminder, any event fees that the Alumni Band takes in for events like Homecoming pay for member related event costs and do not fund our general operating costs.

We are moving toward a fully electronic payment system for dues and events. However, if you need to pay by check, please see the mailing address below. Hello Everyone!

This is the email that everyone has been waiting for. The WVU Alumni Band is happy to announce the 2024 travel/tour schedule.

July 2024 - "A Tribute to Don Wilcox" Michigan Tour
November 2024 - "Support The Pride at Macy's" NYC Tour

In July, the alumni band will be traveling to Michigan to honor former director Don Wilcox. The band will perform a concert ("A Tribute to Don Wilcox") in Northport, MI where Mr. Wilcox currently lives. This concert will tentatively feature the Northport Community Band (NCB) as well. Mr. Wilcox was the conductor of the NCB for several years. The tour will be 4 days/3 nights and include a stay in Detroit, a visit to the Henry Ford Museum, a 2-night stay in Traverse City and a full day to explore one of America's favorite tourist destinations... Mackinac Island (ferry ride included). This tour is open to all WVU Bands alumni whether you are a member of the alumni band or not. If you had Mr. Wilcox as a director, this is your chance to give back to a man who shaped many of our lives. If you did not have Mr. Wilcox as a director, this is an opportunity to honor him for setting the standard that the band has enjoyed for the past 53 years! Former director and current alumni band director John Hendricks will be coordinating and conducting the concert. We hope to have a marching band and concert band component to the concert. The marching band portion of the program is open to former marching band members, twirlers and flags/silks/color guard members as well. While the concert band portion is open to all musicians, this band will be playing some of Mr. Wilcox’s favorite concert pieces. Some of these will be challenging and may not be for everyone. The marching band portion of the program will feature the pre-game music and “Walk Him Up The Stairs/Old Man River”. Literature for the concert band component has yet to be determined.

Registration for the Michigan tour will open on Monday, January 8, 2024 (link below). The participation limit for this tour is 220. However, after one motorcoach has been filled, additional participants will be put on a waiting list until a second, third and fourth bus (hopefully) can be filled. Our maximum is 4 buses for this tour. We must fill each bus before opening up the next bus to make this tour viable. Spouses are welcome to participate in this tour.

In November, the alumni band will be traveling to New York City to support the "Pride of West Virginia" in their second Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade performance in 8 years! All About Destinations (group travel company owned by Jeff Caplinger - WVU Band 84-86) will be partnering with Performing Arts Consultants (tour company of The Pride) to make this tour possible. The tour will include:

9/11 Museum and Memorial,
Empire State Building,
Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island,
Broadway musical,
Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular (featuring the world-renowned Rockettes),
Thanksgiving Dinner, and
Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

In addition, there will be lots of time to explore NYC on your own and also do some early Christmas shopping. The venues for this tour were suggested from comments by band alumni on the social Facebook page following Thanksgiving. Registration for this tour is now open. This tour is open to all WVU Bands alumni whether you are a member of the alumni band or not. There is no participation limit for this tour. However, after one motorcoach has been filled, additional participants will be put on a waiting list until a second bus can be filled. Our minimum to make this trip viable is one bus of 50 people. There will be no performance by the alumni band on this tour. Spouses are welcome to participate in this tour.

Both tours have been designed to keep the cost down so that more band alumni can participate. However, it is difficult to put a price on honoring Mr. Wilcox or supporting the current "Pride" members in a performance-of-a-lifetime. You can participate in one or both of these wonderful opportunities!

Mountain State Forest Festival

The Mountain State Forest Festival has invited the Alumni Band to perform at the opening of this year’s Festival. This event will be held in front of the Depot Amphitheater, on Saturday, September 30, 2023, in Elkins, WV.

Attire: Summer gig shirts, khaki pants, and tennis shoes or sandals. No flip flops.

Following the event, we will reconvene at Colasante’s (located at 416 Fairmont Rd, Morgantown) for a meal. This is totally optional, but we invite you and your loved ones to join us! Each member is responsible for their own meal costs.

A Discussion of the New Dress Code Guidelines

Friends,

As you know, the Alumni Band is in the process of refreshing and rebranding our image. This is for two reasons: one, a request from the WVU Alumni Association sent to all of its member organizations, and two, joining the nationwide trend of NCAA Division I School Alumni Bands towards a more professional appearance.

It is an exciting time. We have grown so much since our inception in 1969. Originally an organization created to facilitate Homecoming participation, the WVU Alumni Band, Inc is now a support affiliate of The Pride of West Virginia and an Ambassador for both the University and the State of West Virginia. For twenty years, Alumni Band Tours have traveled Europe’s major cities and country roads, spreading friendship and the mission of WVU through Music. In recent years, our Alumni Pep Bands have taken on a similar role throughout our home state, performing at a variety of sporting events, appearing on ESPN, civic events, charitable events, and memorial ceremonies. We are a family of thousands, spanning decades, all connected by our love for the WVU Bands.

We have received many good questions and requests from members for more information. First of all, THANK YOU for your interest! Your Thoughts Matter to the Executive Board. As Performance Chair, please allow me to explain what is currently happening.

1. We are starting with an image refresh for the Pep Bands. Over the last two years, many folks have expressed a wish for a new shirt that is not gold. The Spring Merchandise line features a navy Alumni Band T-shirt. The great thing is this shirt is available to Everyone and not limited to only those who currently play or wish to play with the Pep Bands. We are pairing the shirt with khaki pants or shorts. Add your favorite tennis shoes or sandals (no flip flops, please) and you’re set to go! Khakis are MUCH cooler in the summer months and have a cleaner, more professional look. This look is very similar to what our European Tour Alumni Bands have been wearing for years. Please do not worry about the “shade of khaki.” It will all blend well. We currently have a pop up link active under the Performance Dress Code tab on our homepage. While you are there, please check out the other new items appearing in this initial launch, which will extend through midnight May 22nd.

2. The Executive Board is currently working on Homecoming details. If you look at the Performance Dress Code page, you will see it listed as TBA - To Be Announced. We have several possibilities and are working very hard with multiple parties. Our goal is to finalize details and release information in early July. We know there are a lot of rumors flying, but we truly have not made any final decisions. Please be patient - the end result will be worth it.

3. When you look at our current Pop-Up Merchandise Shop, you will see several items have been released in this first launch. Scott Mahaney has worked tirelessly to develop a new line of Alumni Band gear. Just like in the fashion world, our merchandise is appearing in several releases over time. This is simply our first sashay down the catwalk. We have some wonderful new items ahead!

WVU Day of Giving 2023 is right around the corner!

As we move into fundraising for Phase II of the Pride Practice Facility project, we need you to dig deep and help us meet the challenges! Thanks to two WVU alumni you will have two challenges to take advantage of on Day of Giving, specifically supporting the Pride Practice Field and Facility project!

Alum Dave Hendrickson has generously provided a $40,000 challenge. While donations all day supporting The Pride of West Virginia will help us to unlock this challenge from Mr. Hendrickson, we are targeting the 1:00 - 2:00 PM hour for this challenge, to help maximize the availability of BONUS dollars (Most Gifts Bonus Hour) that will be available.

A generous late-night challenge has been established by Alum Ron Davoli, and his wife Paula. We’re specifically targeting 10:00 - 11:00 PM and the BONUS available through the “Repeat Gifts Challenge.” If you donated earlier in the day, a second gift during the Repeat Gifts Challenge hour will help unlock an additional $10,000 from Mr. and Mrs. Davoli!

A gift as small as $5 counts for the Day of Giving. To capitalize on the University-wide challenges, consider dividing a larger gift up into smaller donations during the hour/day so you can have the most impact to help us win additional funds for The Pride Practice and Field Facility!

WVU Day of Giving will begin Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at midnight EST and will run until 11:59 PM EST to allow for donations to be made for a 24-hour period. There are two ways you can donate to support The Pride:

Donate ON Day of Giving: On March 22, visit Day of Giving and be part of this very high-energy day by making your donation.

2nd Annual Family Day at the Gold-Blue Spring Game

The WVU Alumni Band, Inc. is excited to announce our 2nd Annual Family Day at the Gold-Blue Spring Game, Saturday, April 22, 2023! In addition to playing in the stands with The Pride of West Virginia, we will have a pre-game member/family tailgate and a post-game mixer with senior members of The Pride.

The Tailgate will be free for members. Guests and non-members will be $10 for those 13 years of age and older. Twelve and under eat for free! The tailgate will be catered by Apple Annie's of Morgantown, WV. Be sure to register here to attend. For more information about the tailgate and mixer, please visit the the 2023 Gold-Blue Spring Game page at our website.

Registration - Registration is open through April 20, 2023. If you plan to play in the stands with The Pride, we ask that you please register in advance. The Band Office needs to have a count of all those attending. Any updates for the event, including the schedule, will be sent to only those registered.

Attire - Please plan to wear a gold shirt (short or long sleeved) and Khaki pants. The shirt should be family appropriate.

Rental Equipment - Rental equipment will be free and can be secured during registration. Please reserve your equipment by Friday, April 14, 2022. After that date we cannot guarantee availability.

Gold-Blue Spring Game Tickets - You can purchase your game event ticket(s) from WVU in advance here. Tickets are $10 and a portion of the proceeds will benefit WVU Medicine Children's. Everyone must have a ticket to attend the game.

We will receive a schedule and music closer to the event from the Band Office. The final schedule any any updates concerning the event will be posted at our website here.

It is that time of year again to renew your membership for 2023 and be a part of everything the Alumni Band has planned! We have exciting member opportunities coming up soon that you don’t want to miss!

Membership dues are $40.00. However, if you pay your dues by March 31^st, an early bird discount will apply, and the dues payment will be $25.00. The earlier you pay your dues, the more you can enjoy the events that the Alumni Band has to offer.

Greetings fellow Alumni Band members!

We hope each of you had a fun-filled holiday season. We also wish each and every one of you health and happiness in 2023.

Past Events

Homecoming 2022 is in the books! We had a wonderful turnout for the parade and party on Friday night and then Saturday morning for the performance of pregame with The Pride of West Virginia. Members were able to socialize with old friends and enjoy a great buffet from Vice Versa. The Pride of WV pep band stopped by to treat members to a few tunes at the party. Saturday was a new adventure with registration and rehearsal being held at Mountaineer Field. Members enjoyed a light breakfast and lunch from Apple Annie’s before the game with TCU. Members were able to relive their college days by marching with The Pride down Law School Hill and entering the tunnels for pregame.

The year was also a grand celebration of 50 years of women in the band! Festivities kicked off with Angelia Barnett and John Sinsel, accompanied by 1972 Pride member Cindi Shockey, receiving a proclamation celebrating 50 years of women in the band, from Commissioner Tom Bloom of the Monongalia County Commission. The women returning for the weekend participated in the Friday parade and party activities. The class of 1972 women received the Outstanding Alumni Award for 2022 during our annual meeting. These women also received special recognition during the game on Saturday from WVU. Those attending included: Angie Arnold Bowman, Jill Cochran, Joyce Minyard Dawley, Coral Lea Naggy Totten (all part of the Dirty Dozen, attending band camp the first year). Also attending was Eileen Smith Dallabrida and Alcinda "Cindy" Trickett Shockey who joined the band right after band camp in 1972. Thank you ladies for paving the way for women in the band!

After the practice with The Pride on Saturday morning, the 2022 annual WVU Alumni Band, Inc. meeting was held at the tunnel entrance to the stadium. The following are highlights from the meeting:

The President, Mary Lechliter-King, gave an update about activities since the 2021 annual meeting. This included membership meeting information from the past year, updates concerning The Pride picnic during band camp, a reminder that the Alumni Band needs people to help on numerous committees, and the fundraising efforts of the Alumni Band to help The Pride of West Virginia.
Ellen Ramey was announced as our Outstanding Alumni recipient for 2021. Congratulations, Ellen!
Catherine Slawson was the winner of the WVU Alumni Association Lifetime Membership. Congratulations, Catherine!
An update to the makeup of the Alumni Band board was discussed and approved by the membership. The board will then select the officers for the Alumni Band.
It was also discussed that the Alumni Band is looking to integrate better with the Alumni Association as well as upcoming events for the rest of 2022 and into 2023.

More than twenty-three countries will be represented. Information will be released soon about how you can participate in this event.

We really rely on you, our members, to keep this organization going while continuing to provide support to the Pride of West Virginia in all its endeavors. Please consider renewing your membership by March 31^st if you are a current member and if you’re not a member, come join us and see what we have in store for 2023.

Alumni Band Changes to Rehearsal/Registration Location and Other Updates

We have been invited by Dr. Williams and The Pride to spend Homecoming Game Day shadowing them from practice through pre-game! Please read this entire email so you do not miss several important updates concerning Homecoming Weekend 2022.

Game Day

WVU Athletics is graciously working with the Band Office and our Board of Directors to accommodate us spending the day with The Pride and all of our game day activities. Some game day highlights include:

Limited number of parking passes near the stadium. Carpooling will be encouraged.
Registration in the Indoor Practice Facility (IPF), located directly behind the stadium across from the Press Box tunnel.
Combined pre-game show rehearsal at Mountaineer Field.
Joining The Pride on Law School Hill and marching as a unit with them to the tunnels.
Playing in the stands! This year we will be bringing our instruments back to our seats so we can play some of our pre-game music during the game.

Only those registered to march pre-game will be allowed to enter the facility for practice. You must have your wristband and personal ticket/ticket lanyard for entry. If you have a pre-teen/teen with you as your guest, please let us know ASAP at info@wvualumniband.org.

Details are being worked out with the Band Office and a formal schedule with game day details is forthcoming. All updates for the weekend will be sent out by email and also available under the tab Homecoming 2022 at the website.

After Homecoming, WVU Athletics, the Band Office and our Board of Directors will meet to discuss how the day turns out this year to determine if this is something that can continue in the future. WVU Athletics and the Band Office have made it very clear that our alcohol policy applies to all of the facilities we enter (i.e., Mountaineer Field, IPF) for rehearsal, registration, annual meeting, and pre-game. The success of the day will determine future game day activities spent with The Pride.

Additional Guest Ticket

If you would like to purchase an additional guest ticket for the game, you may do so by emailing Sarah at Webmaster@wvualumniband.org. Guest tickets are $70.

Parade Time Change

Parade time step-off is 6:00pm. This time change is due to the high school MoHawk Bowl held Friday evening.

Homecoming 2022 Registration is Now Open

We are excited to announce that registration for 2022 WVU Homecoming Weekend for the WVU Alumni Band, Inc is now open. We hope you'll join us in Morgantown October 28 - 29, 2022 as WVU takes on the TCU Horned Frogs!

This email serves as your official notice for Homecoming 2022. Please keep it for future reference.

Verified and dues paying members can get updated information about Homecoming Weekend 2022 online. Please read all materials.

Below you will find some highlights about this exciting weekend and the registration process!

New Members

New members must be pre-verified before being permitted to pay dues and register. Some cases take extra time as they have to be verified by the band office. Please allow enough time for verification and registration for weekend events.

Parade and Party

We will have a "pass the hat" donation for The Pride at parade line up this year. Pride fundraising is used to help offset costs for the band camp picnic, gift cards for members during camp week, band banquet needs, and senior graduation items to name a few. Any amount you can donate is greatly appreciated.

The reunion party will be held at Vice Versa located at 335 High St (side alley entrance), Morgantown, WV 26505. Ticket prices are $30 per person and will not be available at the door. Attendees must be 21 years of age or older. The party will feature an informal program including games, door prizes, auction items, and the WVU Marching Band Seniors!

Game Day

Member game ticket price is $45 and a guest ticket is $70.

You must be registered in order to participate in pre-game, even if you have your own ticket. You will need credentials from us in order to have access to Mountaineer Field.

We do not have the details and a final schedule for game day finalized with WVU Athletics, Facilities, and the Band Office. We will send out updates concerning game day practice times as more information becomes available. Updates will also be available on the Game Day website page.

Equipment Rentals

Instruments and equipment rentals. The rental cost is $20 (nonrefundable fee) at the time of registration. Please remember to bring your $50 deposit (check - no cash please) and fully completed rental agreement with you the first time you pick up your rental. You will receive your $50 deposit back when the instrument is returned to the truck to the equipment manager. Rentals will only be provided to those submitting registrations prior to Homecoming weekend. See more information at the website.

Dues and Registration

Dues and Homecoming Registration can be paid using PayPal. Dues must be paid before you register for Homecoming events. Please see information to register for 2022 Homecoming events.

Online registration closes October 14, 2022 and payments made by mail must be postmarked by October 14, 2022. Any payments and/or paper registrations not received by the due date are subject to cancellation. Late registrations are subject to a $35 late fee. A wait list will be available at the registration portal until Wednesday, October 26th. If you take a chance and register the day of the event, you will need to come to the trouble table at the CAC to see if we have tickets left. We do not issue refunds. Please plan accordingly.

*Please note that registrations for the parade and party are separate from game day events. This allows us to properly account for member attendance for the party and game day tickets.

Pride Member Picnic and Gift Cards

Hello fellow band alumni,

As most of you know, the WVU Alumni Band has been sponsoring more activities and funding needs in support of the members of The Pride over the past few years. These activities have included the band picnic, the band banquet, and senior day, to name a few. This year we would like to provide a $10 gift card to a local Morgantown restaurant for each band member during the annual band picnic.

This past week, members of the TBT pep band have generously donated $340 for this cause covering 34 gift cards (Snare, Tenors, Cymbals, and two Twirlers). Four members individually donated funds to cover their former sections (Alto Saxes, Tenor Saxes, and Baritones).

We are asking our former alumni to help support this effort. Any amount you can give is greatly appreciated. Even if your section is already covered, please consider donating so some of the uncovered sections can receive a gift card too. I have asked a lot of restaurants to help out, but I haven't gotten very far with any of them. Unfortunately, almost all the support the band gets comes from you, our alumni.

Tuesday, August 9^th is the annual Pride picnic sponsored by the WVU Alumni Band. If you are able to provide a monetary donation to help offset the cost of the picnic, it would be greatly appreciated. Please go to our Contribute page to donate.

Pep Band Events

Pep Band members are needed for the Mountaineer Main Street event in St. Albans, WV on Saturday, August 27^th. Time of our performance is still being worked out with the event organizers. If you are interested in participating, please register here.

There will be live music from 4-10pm and over 60 vendors participating. They will have prizes all day that include gas cards, WVU home game tickets and more.

Pep Band members are needed for WVU Cleft Craniofacial Center patient and clinic staff picnic at Dorsey’s Knob Park, in Morgantown, WV. The event will be on Saturday afternoon, September 24, 2022. This group had us play for them in 2019 and are excited to have us back. More information to come about the performance time. If you are interested in participating, please register here.

2022 TBT Tournament and Scrimmage In July

The WVU Alumni Band has been invited to play for the Best Virginia team in the 2022 Fairmont, WV scrimmage and the Charleston, WV TBT Basketball Tournament. Registration is required in order to participate at both events. Below are some highlights concerning the scrimmage and the tournament.

Fairmont, WV Scrimmage

Date & Venue - July 16, 2022 at The Feaster Center on the campus of Fairmont State University. Tipoff is at 6:00pm. Call time for rehearsal and setup is 4:45pm.
Muriale's - There will be an opportunity to gather at Muriale's prior to the event for a late afternoon lunch.

Charleston, WV Tournament

Date & Venue - The first game will be held on July 24, 2022 at the Charleston Civic Center. Tipoff is at 7pm against Virginia Dream. Report time for pep band members will be 5:45pm. Please enter the facility via the loading dock. If Best Virginia advances, performances will be held on July 26th and 27th.

Registration/Deadlines

Please go to our TBT Tournament page to register. The registration deadline is Noon on July 5, 2022 for the Fairmont scrimmage and Noon on July 15, 2022 for the Charleston Tournament.

Tickets and Guests

Both events are FREE for those participating in the pep band. Guests are welcome to purchase a ticket at the door for the Fairmont event and in advance for the Charleston tournament. Guests will be seated with the general public. Non-pep band members will not be permitted in the music area.

Gold-Blue Spring Game - Come out and play with the band!

The WVU Alumni Band Inc. is excited to announce that we will be attending the Gold-Blue game this year on April 23, 2022, to participate in the stands with The Pride of West Virginia. We are looking forward to starting a new tradition of playing during the Annual Spring game. This will be an event that you can share with your families.

Please plan to wear a gold short or long sleeved shirt and dark blue pants or jeans. The shirt should be family appropriate. We will receive a schedule and music closer to the date from the Band office.

Tickets for the Gold-Blue Spring Game are $10 and can be purchased in advance from WVU here. A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit WVU Medicine Children’s. Tickets may also be purchased at the gate the day of the game.

We ask that you please register here as the band office needs to have a count of all those attending. Any updates for the event, including the schedule, will be sent to only those registered.

Rental equipment will be free and can be secured during registration. Please reserve your equipment by Friday, April 15, 2022. After that date we cannot guarantee availability.

The WVU Alumni Band is hosting two spring baseball game raffles in support of activities for the WVU Marching Band. The raffles open Monday, March, 28, 2022 at Noon to band alumni and the general public. Be sure to share the information with your friends and family.

Pittsburgh Saint Patrick's Day Parade March 12, 2022

Parade Information

We need to be at line-up by 9:00am. The parade begins at 10:00am. We plan to hold a rehearsal at line-up if allowed.

Equipment/Instrument Rental – We are working to be able to provide rental equipment for this event. If you can rent from a local music store (such as Music and Arts) or can borrow an instrument from a local school or a friend, please do so.

IF we are able to provide rentals, there would be a limited number/type of equipment available. More information about this will be posted as it becomes available.

Registration for Homecoming has opened back up until midnight, Friday, September 17, 2021. A late fee registration for 2021 Homecoming activities is now applicable. If you didn't get your registration in early, you have a few more days to register. If WVU cancels guest participation for Homecoming, all of your money, minus the registration fee and late fee will be refunded.

Pride Alumni members will be Dean Jackson’s special guests for a brunch celebration in the Canady Creative Arts Center parking lot. Let’s celebrate the progress made to raise money in support of the Pride Practice Field and Facility project and launch the next phase of a home for our marching band.

We hope you are well and enjoying your summer! Did you see the Best Virginia team and some of our own WVU Alumni Band members on ESPN during the TBT Basketball Tournament this past week in Charleston, WV? If you didn’t see any of the games, you sure missed a great time.

Congratulations to Best Virginia for making it to the 3^rd round! Even though they were defeated by Team 23, they had a great showing and some exciting basketball play.

A big Thank You to everyone who made their way to Charleston and played in the pep band. You all looked and sounded great! You made us all very proud! Thanks goes out to Angelia Barnett for coordinating all of the details with the TBT event staff. And a special Thank You to Ellen Ramey for not only conducting such a great group of musicians, but for rallying the troops to get the different instrumentation covered. Awesome job everyone!

We have just 41 more days! Are you ready for some football?! As we transition to fall and college football, we have some updates to share about upcoming August events and WVU Homecoming 2021. Please take a moment to review our latest announcements.

Announcements

· Tuesday, August 10, 2021 – The Pride Picnic is being sponsored by the WVU Alumni Band, Inc. It will be held at Krepps Park. The High Street Jazz Band will be providing music during dinner. We need members to assist in setting up starting at 4:00pm. If you would like to participate, email Dave O’Neil (correspondence@wvualumniband.org) so we know how many people to expect.

· Homecoming 2021 – We are pleased to announce that we will return for WVU Homecoming 2021 weekend with a modified schedule. To plan an engaging weekend, we recently asked all of you to complete a survey about Homecoming weekend. Additionally, we have been consulting for months with WVU Athletics, the directors of The Pride, and the College of Creative Arts Dean’s Office. After reviewing the survey responses and getting the latest information available from WVU, we have prepared what we hope will be a weekend filled with new memories as we celebrate being able to gather together with old and new friends. Because there are no guarantees with each football weekend due to COVID, we have decided to go with a set of activities that most likely will be able to move forward as planned.

o Friday, October 1, 2021

Homecoming parade – We will plan to march in the parade if WVU has a parade and allows outside organization participation.

o Saturday October 2, 2021

Pre-game Tailgate – A pre-game tailgate prior to the WVU vs Texas Tech Red Raiders football game. Time and place will be announced soon. Tickets to attend the tailgate (which will include food and beverage) will be available. More details soon.

Football game – We will have tickets available for purchase for members and 1 guest for each member. We will not be marching on the field or playing in the stands.

We hope to open Homecoming registration in mid-August as soon as all costs for activities are finalized. Alumni Pep Band Needed in New Jersey for September

A WVU alumnus is having a Virginia Tech game watch party September 18th on the southern New Jersey shore in Haddonfield.

He is requesting a pep band for before, during, and after the game. This is a beautiful beach house on lots of land, the event will happen rain or shine. Check it out! exitzerohouse.com

If you are in the New Jersey/Philadelphia/Delaware area, please consider volunteering. This will raise over $250 for the new practice field!

Now in existence for over 50 years, we continue to strive to make our University Marching Band program one of the best, if not the best in the nation. State of the Practice Field Address and Upcoming Day of Giving Information

We are writing to give you an update on the campaign to fundraise for the Pride Practice Facility and Field Project, and we have some good news to share with you!

As you know, your Alumni Band has been helping to raise money for a new state of the art practice facility and field for the Pride of West Virginia. The construction will be completed in three phases:

1. Turf Field;

2. Storage Building;

3. Covered Pavilion.

The band has provided all of us with lifelong friendships and memories. It is time for us to give back and provide a permanent home for the future generations of band kids experiencing what we once did, because who cares about the band as much as WE do?

We have agreed to partner with the College of Creative Arts Dean, Keith Jackson, and Development Director, Jennifer Jordan, to make this project a success. Through our partnership with the College, approximately $650,000 has been raised supporting the facility to date.

The good news we are thrilled to share with you is that the College of Creative Arts has been awarded a “matching grant,” up to $250,000, from the Maier Foundation for the upcoming WVU Day of Giving on March 3. You read that right: donations in support of the Pride Practice Facility and Field Project will be matched dollar for dollar on March 3!

This is a tremendous opportunity for us! We are closing in on raising the $1 million required to hold a groundbreaking at Homecoming this fall. This would be amazing for both band students and alumni alike. In a year when the student band experience has been anything but normal due to COVID, we can collectively give our band this gift.

You have some options to consider, as we approach March 3:

1. Become a WVU Day of Giving Ambassador: As an ambassador, you will be equipped with tools to share your WVU passion within your social network and track the impact you're making during the WVU Day of Giving. You help create excitement about WVU Day of Giving before and during the campaign. Here's how it works:

Sign up to be an ambassador by registering at dayofgiving.wvu.edu – There is an Ambassador tab at the top of the page.
Once registered, you will have access to social media graphics and example language for social media posts.
A personalized URL to share on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram (or wherever else you want to) to encourage your friends and family to participate. You will get to see your direct impact on the day!
The top five registered ambassadors who inspire the most gifts through their unique URL will receive a WVU swag box.

2. Recurring Gifts: On the Day of Giving site, a donor can select to make a recurring gift (for example, you can schedule a donation every two weeks for the next year). Recurring donations made on the Day of Giving count for a year’s total (or the total for whatever the designated duration is). The entire recurring gift amount will be eligible to be matched!

3. Major Gifts and Planned Gifts: If any Alumni Band members have been considering making a Major Gift or Planned Gift towards the Pride Practice Facility, they could do so on the Day of Giving and it will count for the day. You can set up pledge payments for the Major Gift, but the entire gift amount will count towards the day! Pledge payments could also be set up for gifts that are not quite at the major gift level, however, the full gift amount would be counted towards the day. For instance, if you’re interested in making a $25,000 gift toward the facility, it could be paid over 5 years in $5,000 payments with the entire gift being counted towards Day of Giving…and then matched!

We are sure you all remember back when you started in junior high band and had to go from door-to-door selling something or had car washes or rock-a-thons or…you get the drift. Things really never change even on the collegiate level. We have learned this to be true with all universities, not just ours. Every uniform and most band travel are paid for by donors like yourselves. This field will be a lasting tribute to our commitment and love for the Pride of West Virginia.

We didn't have a “home” when we were in band, but we can give one to future generations of the marching band. Please consider asking friends and family to participate in the Day of Giving to ensure we take advantage of the very generous match being provided – and remember, YOU also need to give generously yourselves.

In closing, we'd like to paraphrase the late President Kennedy who said "Ask not what your band can do for you, but what can you do for your band.” Now is the time… Let’s Go Mountaineers!!

This is a reminder that your membership is due for renewal as of today with the WVU Alumni Band, Inc. Membership dues are $35.00 (voted on by the membership at the October 2020 WVU Alumni Band, Inc. annual meeting). However, if you pay your dues by April 1, an early bird discount will apply, which makes your dues $20.00. Please see information below about important changes to the renewal process.

1. Membership renewal for 2021 will be processed as an "Event" from our website (https://www.wvualumniband.org). You can find the registration on our homepage under the Event tab or under the Upcoming Events call box.

2. You can renew online by logging in with your email and password. If you do not remember your password, please select the "Forgot Password" link located in the upper right corner of the homepage under the login fields. If you do not remember the email address you used to register, do not sign up for a new account. Please email the site administrator at webmaster@wvualumniband.org.

Greetings fellow Alumni Band members!

We hope each of you had a nice holiday season. Whether you celebrated with family or stayed close to home, we wish each of you the best in 2021.

Past Events

The 2020 Annual WVU Alumni Band, Inc. meeting was held via Zoom on Tuesday, October 13, 2020. The following are highlights from the meeting:

1. Dr. Cheldon Williams spoke to the membership about the WVU Marching Band and how things have been going in dealing with the challenges faced with COVID-19 restrictions during football season.

2. The President, Mary Lechliter-King, gave an update about what the board has been working on since the 2019 homecoming event.

3. The Chairs for Merchandise, Becky Campbell, and Bylaws, Theresa Smith, were announced.

4. Membership voted to approve an increase in membership dues. The new amount is $35.00. Anyone paying their dues by March 31, 2021 will only pay $20 with an early bird discount.

5. 2020-2021 Officers were elected.

Adopt-A-Dot Campaign Updates

We continue to raise funds for the new Alumni Band Practice Facility. We have currently sold over 185! Thank you to those who have already participated. Former Pride Assistant Director, David Satterfield, has shared with us his support for this new facility.

Being the Assistant Director of the Mountaineer Marching Band has been one of the true honors and highlights of my career. Each and every year, the Pride of West Virginia touches literally tens of thousands of West Virginians with a visible display of State tradition, pride, and excellence. More importantly, this iconic group provides life-changing experiences for the 300+ members each and every year.

2020 marks the 40th anniversary of new Mountaineer Field ---- Mylan Puskar Stadium. During that time, our athletic facilities, programs, notoriety, and our place in football history has evolved significantly. Sadly, the same cannot be said for the rehearsal facilities of the Mountaineer Marching Band. It is time for a new practice facility and I applaud the efforts of everyone involved in this heroic undertaking.

A new practice facility will assist with recruiting as well as provide a rehearsal space fitting the excellence which continues to be a hallmark of our program. Upcoming Events

Auctions - The WVU Alumni Band, Inc. will be launching a new auction fundraising event at the end of January. More information will be provided in the coming days about the first auction item.

2021 Membership Dues - Event Payment

Membership renewal for 2021 will be processed as an "Event" from our website. Starting Friday, January 15, 2021 you will need to go to the website and login to process your payment. Greetings fellow Alumni Band members!

Let’s Go Mountaineers! After months of uncertainty, NCAA football is finally underway and our Mountaineers are off to a great start for the 2020 season. We hope each of you will try to catch a game by radio or TV throughout the season and sing Country Roads with each victory.

Upcoming Events

Although Homecoming events are cancelled, we will be holding our 2020 Annual WVU Alumni Band, Inc. meeting. The meeting will be a virtual Zoom meeting on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at 7:30pm. This is a member only meeting. Those members with current paid membership will receive more information about registration for the event.

Adopt-A-Dot Campaign Updates

We continue to raise funds for the new Alumni Band Practice Facility. We have currently sold over 100 dots! Thank you to those who have already participated. Former Pride Director, Don Wilcox, has shared with us his support for this new facility.

The project of providing a long-needed all-weather practice facility for the Pride of West Virginia is one that has been dear to my heart for many years. From our years of practice at the infamous “Mud Bowl” with its ankle-deep puddles, to eventually our paved parking lot by the Coliseum which was the band’s happy home for many years, it has been a long journey of almost 50 years.

The idea of an actual indoor facility [covered pavilion] for the marching band was a dream of mine for almost half a century, and maybe the time has finally come! I would love to come back for Homecoming and share such a wonderful facility with the band that will always be Number ONE in my heart.

Dear Member:

I hope this finds each of you healthy during this difficult time. I have updates that I would like to share.

It is with great sadness that I announce that the Board of Directors has voted to cancel Homecoming 2020 events. This has been a difficult decision and not one that any of us take lightly. After many conversations with both Athletics and the band office, it was determined that hosting events this year is not possible. We won’t be able to host a party, be allowed on the field, or have use of the CAC at all. With the current orders in place by the Governor of WV, the parade is also highly unlikely. Also, seating availability at the stadium can’t be confirmed for an organization of our size.

We graciously ask that you consider applying monies that you would have used for Homecoming toward our Adopt-A-Dot campaign. The Pride isn't traveling this season, and the band office has assured us the travel fund is stable. Monetary donations would greatly benefit the new practice facility construction as well. 50th Edition of the WVU Alumni Band, Inc Marches with The Pride

Our 50th Anniversary Homecoming is a story of growth, evolution, diversity, inclusion...and most importantly Magic and Love. Some things NEVER change...and we are ALL uniquely blessed by that extraordinary constant.

The Pregame drill we all know by heart was written by Don Wilcox around 1975 to both accommodate a growing organization and as a gift of love to former students so they would continue to feel a dose of the magic. For over 40 years, the drill has not changed except to “amoeba” the pictures to accommodate larger numbers of returning veterans. Old folks run around with paper charts (GASP) and try to squeeze countless more bodies into the original wVu. It’s getting crowded out there.

Over the years, many folks have mentioned not just the need to tweak the traditional drill to accommodate our growth, but the wish we could somehow be even more integrated with The Pride during pregame. Both the Board of Directors and the Band Office have shared the same vision. For over a year, the BOD brainstormed ideas to make our 50^th Anniversary extra special at pregame. After many discussions with the Band Office, we were all able to make that dream of performing with The Pride and perform Simple Gifts come true.

Thanks to Dr. Scott Tobias, who took on the challenge of writing a massive drill for approximately 700 bodies, and Dr. Stephen Lytle, who collaborated with him and took on the challenge of modifying The Pride’s pregamedrill...and has the personal courage to believe we can pull it off and lead this massive effort with a little over an hour of Alumni Band drill setting and no joint rehearsal beforehand.

The Pride and the WVU Alumni Band will field a joint pregame show never seen before. Friends, I’ve had a chance to see the drill...in motion...on the fancy cell phone app the kids use these days. It’s Brilliant. I’m telling you here and now...THIS IS GOING TO BE GREAT!!!!!

As I’ve grown older these last few years, I’ll admit the thought of the run on and then having the ability to execute the downfield medley has given me pause. I know many of you share those concerns, but Wild Horses Could Not Keep Me Off The Field This Year. So, my friends please take a second look at the music downloads on our website and make sure you have ALL of the tunes printed.

2019 President's Greeting

Happy 50th!! What better way to celebrate our 50th Anniversary than by being together with friends who are now family!! We have come a long way in 50 years. Here's to our next 50!

We have had a busy year. We were invited back to march in the Pittsburgh St. Patrick's Day Parade. Members had a wonderful time and we plan to attend again in the future.

Additionally, we have been working all year long on many projects. Wanda Hembree, Dave O'Neal, and I went to the Alumni Band Symposium in Seattle Washington. We were invited to share our experiences as being a long running alumni band program. I went with the attitude that we have our stuff together and, look at us, we give The Pride $5,000 each year. Well, let me tell you, I was blown out of the water by what Ohio State, Wisconsin, Texas, Florida, Georgia and others give to their bands. They have budgets that are in the MILLIONS - yes, you read that right. I just couldn't believe it. So, if they can raise that kind to money, so can we!!

We got so many great ideas from all the Universities that attended. Fundraising was a topic of interest for us as The Pride begins its journey to erect a new practice facility. We received great tips for forming area pep bands to play for hire at parties, tailgates, weddings, birthday parties, and funerals. You name it, we can play it! We will be in need of many people to help coordinate this project as we want to have groups prepared to play all across the country! More information will be coming out soon about how you can participate.

We are also in the early stages of planning a WVU Alumni Band, Inc. Gala event. There will be so many new ways for members to volunteer in support of The Pride while enjoying time with our extended band family. Watch for email announcements and updates on our website as new events develop (www.wvualumniband.org).

Greetings and welcome to the 49th WVU Alumni Band, Inc. Homecoming!

We have had a busy year. We participated in the Pittsburgh St. Patrick's Day Parade, WVU Alumni Basketball game and a group went on an International Tour.

We have been invited back to the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Pittsburgh for 2019. If there is something that you would like to participate in, please let us know. We have found that events over the holidays don’t work for our members, so please keep that in mind.

I would like to welcome our new band director, Steven Lytle, to our Pride Family. I have had the chance to meet him in person. He is very excited to have an alumni band to work with and has some ideas for us. We are looking forward to working with him more in the future. We will keep you posted on any upcoming projects/ideas.

Registration for 2018 WVU Homecoming events will open Monday September 3^rd. Please be sure to read the official notice that will be sent out by email announcing registration.

WVU 2018 Homecoming weekend will begin Friday October 5th with the annual parade. Saturday, Oct. 6th the Mountaineers take on the Kansas Jayhawks. Time to be determined.

Texas Tech Football Game on ESPNU at Noon

The Big 12 Conference has announced that WVU’s Saturday, Oct. 14, Big 12 Conference football game against Texas Tech at Milan Puskar Stadium will be televised on ESPNU at noon ET.

SCHEDULE - Game is NOON Kick-Off

7:00-8:00 AM- Pick up your registration packet, and music at the CAC, across the road from the WVU Coliseum. Breakfast will be available (scrambled egg bar, home fries, muffins, fruit, and more). If you plan to register on Saturday, please arrive early. Cash and check only for registration payments. A $35 late fee applies to late registrations.
7:15-7:45 AM– The equipment truck is open on the practice field. Don't be late; volunteers arrive on time.
7:45-8:00 AM- Practice Field - Brief meeting with the Board of Directors, Executive Committee and Alumni Band members in attendance.
8:00-9:30 AM– On-field marching and music rehearsal with drill. Don’t be late and be prepared for a fast-paced rehearsal; those who’ve not checked in by 10:30am are subject to losing their spots and tickets may be reassigned if needed.
9:30-10:00 AM– Members are encouraged to stay for brief awards presentations; we’ll also sing the Alma Mater and make last minute announcements about the stadium before breaking prior to pre-game. Unclaimed tickets will be redistributed at this time.
10:00-11:00 PM- Eat lunch and walk, take the shuttle bus, or hitch a ride to the football stadium following rehearsal. The Shuttle Bus is an economical and reliable way to get to and from the stadium. Enter the stadium via the Southwest tunnel gate.
Please be prepared to enter the field starting at 11:00 AM. The Southwest tunnel entrance (Press Box Side) will close at 11:30 AM. Remember you will be checked for ticket, wrist band and there will be a bag check. NO CASES ARE ALLOWED. Game time kick-off is at NOON.
11:45 AM - ?- After performing pre-game, we’ll watch the WVU Band perform from the sidelines. Please remember to move out of the team bench area as soon as the National Anthem and Alma Matter conclude. Move off the field immediately and into the Southwest tunnel to exit to go to your seats. WVU athletics wants us off the field as soon as we finish. During the game, we’ll help the WVU Band play fight songs and short tunes from the stands.

Registration will be held at the CAC. We REPEAT! Registration will be held at the CAC. Due to a WVU Rifle tournament being held all weekend at the WVU Shell and renovations at the coliseum, we have to move to the lobby of the CAC. Breakfast, late registration (trouble table), member packets and merchandise will all be in the main lobby of the CAC. The meeting and rehearsal will all be held at the field. Please keep your travel logistics in mind when arriving on Saturday as you will have to go between the two venues. We have arranged Saturday times with WVU to accommodate this.

Due to the later practice start time, parking will be at a minimum around the coliseum. The parking lots there are used for game day parking and WVU is not holding parking for us. Please plan accordingly. Don’t be late because you can’t find a place to park.

Mountaineer Area Council BSA has approved being a drop off for band instruments that are playable. Donations can be left at the Service Center in Fairmont or at Camp Mountaineer on the Grafton Rd. Grant Rumble will be supervising this endeavor. Remember please don't donate instruments that need a lot of repair as bands can't afford to fix instruments.

Dues Date Change

In the 2015 newsletter, it was reported that the date for annual membership dues would change from July 1 each year to January 1. The WVU Alumni Band, Inc. committee voted to make this change in date to ease record keeping and align it with tax reporting for the 501c status. The membership present at the October 10, 2015 annual membership meeting, held during homecoming weekend, voted to approve the change.

Lapsed Memberships: If when you login to pay your dues you find that your membership status is “lapsed,” you may choose to pay electronically. You will need to contact the Webmaster so that your account membership dates can be properly applied. The WVU Alumni Band, Inc. DOES NOT collect for past dues – only current year dues. However, your lapsed status will not automatically update to reflect the current year payment. So please be sure to send an email to webmaster@wvualumniband.org so that your account can be updated with the appropriate membership dates.

Membership status will change to lapsed if the member has not paid dues in the last 364 days. If your membership has a status of lapsed for more than two years, your account will be archived and no longer accessible. You will have to contact the Webmaster to have your account re-activated. Our membership database is growing every year and having inactive accounts is costly to the organization.

The visitation for Drew is Monday January 12, 2015 from 2-4 & 6-9 pm., with the Funeral on Tuesday January 13, 2-15 at 11 am at Newman's Funeral Home in Grantsville, MD.

Passing of Former WVU Foundation Leaders Jim Robinson and Lysander Dudley

WVU has reported that Jim Robinson and Lysander Dudley have recently passed away. The two past leaders of the West Virginia University Foundation are being remembered for their service and commitment to the University.

Robinson, who served as Foundation president from 1984 until his retirement in 1998, passed away Tuesday in Arizona. He was 81. Dudley, who served as executive director (title later changed to president) of the Foundation from 1976-1983, died Wednesday in Florida. He was 83.

2014 Registration & Payment Details

Dues can now be paid using PayPal! Dues must be paid before you register for Homecoming events. Please follow the steps below to pay dues and register for 2014 Homecoming events.

1. Log-in and process your membership invoice. Remember, that you will not be able to register for homecoming events until you process your dues invoice. (If you have already paid or processed a renewal, move to step 2.)

2. Next, register for 2014 Homecoming activities. There are TWO registrations - one for the parade and party and a second for game day events. Register for the parade and party, the game or both. Use the on-line forms (see upcoming events below), by September 26th to get the Early Bird Discount. You may also download, print and mail in your registration form. Note that if you choose to register with the paper form that your registration will be based off the postmark.

3. If you use the paper form, be sure to download and attach the member ticket agreement form and the alcohol policy agreement form to your registration.

4. RENTAL EQUIPMENT - THE FEE IS $20 FOR THE WEEKEND. YOU ONLY NEED TO REQUEST EQUIPMENT ON ONE EVENT FORM WHETHER YOU ARE RENTING FOR FRIDAY, SATURDAY OR BOTH. IF YOU COMPLETE THIS SECTION ON BOTH FORMS YOU WILL BE CHARGED $40. SO, PLEASE ONLY REQUEST EQUIPMENT ON ONE FORM.

5. Once you have registered for all events you wish to participate in, you can pay your full balance for dues and all event registration invoices in one transaction. You will see a "Balance Due" in the lower right corner of your computer screen. Click on that and all event registrations will be bundled together. Status of 2014-2015 Dues and 2014 Homecoming Registration

Because of the legal issues around securing the 501c, many details surrounding the operational activities of the organization and planning of homecoming had to be put on hold.

The Board of Directors and members present at the July 2014 meeting voted to increase the dues from $17 to $20. In the coming weeks, you will be able to pay your dues on-line.

The newsletter and on-line registration for 2014 Homecoming will be available at the end of August. We will also be offering on-line payments for homecoming activities this year. Members will be sent an email once on-line payment for dues and homecoming registration become available. There will also be a message on the website. Don Wilcox Guest Conductor for the 11th Annual Three Rivers Community Band Festival

The eleventh annual Three Rivers Community Band Festival will be held Saturday, April 26, 2014, at the Upper St. Clair High School Theater.

The festival will once again include a Festival Band comprised of community players from all over the region.

There will not be a December WVU Alumni Band Board meeting. The next regular meeting is scheduled for January 26th. The meeting will be held at Treasurer Patty Slagel's home. Time to be announced.

Passing of Millard Hill

It is with heavy hearts that we report that fellow musician Millard Hill, aged 89, passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2013. Millard played baritone in the WVU Band and Alumni Band. He and his wife Betty traveled on many of the Alumni Band trips overseas, performing for audiences in over a dozen countries. He always had a beautiful smile and wonderful sense of humor to share. He was a true Mountaineer and friend. He will be greatly missed by his WVU Band family.

Services for Millard will be held September 28, 2013 at 11am at the Indian River City United Methodist Church, Titusville, FL 32780. Please send condolences for Betty and the family to the following address:

Helpful Tips for New Members

Injecting yourself into a new organization can be challenging. When you're part of the Pride of West Virginia, the tradition continues on after graduation and so here are some helpful tips to get yourself quickly registered and part of the WVU Alumni Band.

Become an Official Member and Register for Homecoming

New members must be pre-verified before being permitted to register for Homecoming Weekend.
After you request membership and are being verified, it may take up-to five business days to confirm your eligibility; this is done so as to ensure everyone who participates with the WVU Alumni Band has earned that privilege.
Register for Homecoming before September 23 to ensure the best chance to participate.
First time, newly graduated four-year seniors are eligible to have their dues waived for the first year following graduation. This works by extending new members who attend Homecoming a refund of $17 annual dues, with a rebate check being provided at the event. So, if you just graduated, be sure to note that on your Homecoming registration form.
The first 20 newly graduated four-year seniors
registering for Homecoming will be refunded your member game ticket costs, with a check being provided at Saturday morning Homecoming check-in. This is possible by a WVU Alumni Band Grant Program.

There will be no online payment system for dues or 2013 Homecoming. Dues for 2013-2014 are $17.00. Homecoming online registration will be available on or about August 20th.

2014 WVU Alumni Tour Band - British Isles

The WVU Alumni Tour Band is going to the British Isles on July 13-28, 2014. The tour is being very enthusiastically responded to, and we are limited by air travel and accommodations to the number of folks we can take. Obviously tour "veterans" have earned a slight advantage, and probably Alumni over non WVU folks; and players over "just sightseers". Extended family will be accepted where possible. Patrick John Hughes Parent/Booster Award

Congratulations go to Jeff ("PJ") Littleton! PJ was awarded the Patrick John Hughes Parent/Booster Award from Music For All at the Bands of America Grand Nationals! He was a member of the trumpet section of the WVU Band from 1979-1983.
